Launched in 2001, the .NAME universal extension is the only one supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained functional.
